PRP: What is it?

before and after hair treatment

PRP, known as platelet-rich plasma, is a therapy that uses parts of your own blood to help heal tissue.  Used for a variety of different health concerns, PRP contains many vital growth factors that can decrease inflammation, as well as promote cell and tissue regeneration.

What is PRP Hair Restoration?

When injected into the scalp, PRP helps to stimulate dormant or inactive hair follicles, causing hair regrowth. Not only is new hair growth promoted, but hair that already exists may also grow in thicker and healthier.   Treatment consists of a three-step process. Blood is drawn from the arm similarly to a lab for other medical reasons. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, where it is separated into the different components. This isolates the platelets to create a highly concentrated serum, or PRP, for injection into the areas where the hair is scarce.  Typically you’ll need about three PRP treatments every four to six weeks to experience regrowth. Maintenance treatments may be needed every six months to one year.

Are You a Good Candidate for PRP?

PRP treatment is ideal for both men and women who are suffering from hair loss. Because the procedure involves taking your own blood to extract the platelet-rich plasma, you need to be healthy enough to undergo this particular treatment. If you are on blood thinners or are a heavy smoker, you may not be suitable for treatment. Patients with other conditions such as diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and platelet dysfunction syndromes may also not be candidates for the procedure.

Prior to having PRP therapy done, you’ll have a consultation with one of our physicians to help answer all of your questions. During the consultation, a medical history will be taken and you’ll be advised if PRP is right for you.

What to Expect with the Procedure

Once your doctor has assessed your suitability for PRP therapy, you will be treated every 4 -6 weeks for up to 3 or more treatments.  On the day of the procedure, a topical numbing cream is applied to the scalp while your blood is drawn and processed. The platelet-rich plasma is then placed into a syringe and injected into the areas of the scalp where hair is thin.  We additionally offer Pro-nox (similar to nitrous used in dentist offices), which is a patient-controlled anesthesia method that may make the experience more comfortable for you. The areas of hair loss are injected, and ice is immediately applied to the scalp afterwards.  The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes.

PRP hair restoration is ideal for both women and men living in both NYC and Huntington, NY. The procedure has minimal down time, and expected results can exceed other conventional methods of generating hair regrowth such as shampoos and medications.  Because of this, PRP hair restoration has become increasingly popular for those wanting a natural and lasting option to regain confidence and self-esteem.
