What are the Benefits of Collagen Induction (Microneedling) Therapy?

Collagen Induction Therapy, also known as microneedling, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that aims to address a variety of skin concerns such as fine lines.  Using a small handheld device with sterile needles, tiny perforations are made in the skin to induce a wound healing response. This results in the production of new collagen and elastin.   As one ages, the skin tends to lose these structural proteins, contributing to fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling, therefore, boosts your natural production of these two vital elements of young healthy skin, creating a smoother, firmer and more toned skin appearance. The procedure is mainly used on the face and may also treat scars and enlarged pores.

Areas to Use Collagen Induction Therapy

Microneedling is most often used on your face to target the following areas:

  • Acne scars
  • Age or sun spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone

Additionally, it can help alleviate stretch marks and scars on other areas of the body.

The Collagen Induction Therapy Procedure

During your procedure, the doctors at Cold Spring Plastic Surgery will use the only FDA cleared adjustable microneedling device, SkinPen.  After applying a numbing cream to clean skin, the treatment will be performed using a therapeutic serum, tailoring the depth and protocol specific to your needs.  The needles themselves are thinner than a human hair and cause tiny punctures in the area being treated, directing your skin to release biomolecules that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin fibers, and new blood vessels.  This not only heals the wound, but it also allows therapeutic products to penetrate through the skin barrier more effectively, significantly boosting your results. Afterward, your skin is cleansed and covered with a treatment serum that you will apply every few hours over the next 24 hours.

What to Expect After Collagen Induction Therapy

Recovery time is minimal after the procedure and most people need very little downtime, if at all. You may notice some skin irritation and redness within the first few days after your procedure but you can go back to work or school if you feel comfortable. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun so wearing sunscreen is strongly advised.

Seeing Results with Collagen Induction Therapy

Depending on the area of your skin being treated, the number of treatments you may need will vary. Typically, you can begin to see improvements two to four weeks after your treatment session. If you have deep scarring or wrinkles, you may need additional treatment sessions spaced 4 weeks apart in order to obtain optimal results.
